Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you applied AI or machine learning to an existing GIS process. What changed, and what did not work?

What they are checking: Whether they use AI where it actually helps and can speak honestly about its limits.

Tell me about a time you brought a new approach to a solution other engineers were comfortable with. How did you win them over?

What they are checking: Whether a senior engineer can influence peers with evidence rather than authority.

What would you do

A business team says the property locations on their map look wrong. How do you investigate?

What they are checking: Whether they trace the problem back through the data lineage calmly instead of guessing or blaming the source.

About the work

Walk me through a geocoding pipeline you built. Where did addresses fail to resolve, and what did you do with the ones that did?

What they are checking: Whether they have handled messy real-world addresses at scale rather than only clean demo data.

You have building records in two systems with different IDs and different data models. How would you match them?

What they are checking: How they combine spatial proximity, fuzzy text matching and rules to reconcile records without a shared key.

How do you decide a match is good enough to accept automatically versus sending it to a person for review?

What they are checking: Whether they think in confidence thresholds and the business cost of false matches versus missed ones.

What data-quality checks do you build into a geospatial pipeline so bad coordinates never reach downstream users?

What they are checking: Whether validation and monitoring are part of their design from the start or bolted on after a failure.

How do you handle coordinate reference systems and projections when data arrives from many sources?

What they are checking: Basic geospatial fluency that prevents quiet, hard-to-find errors in distance and location calculations.

Which spatial databases or libraries have you used, such as PostGIS, and how did you index for performance?

What they are checking: Whether they can make spatial queries fast on large property portfolios, not just correct.

How do you build the interface between a geocoding service and the apps that consume it so changes do not break them?

What they are checking: Their thinking on API contracts, versioning and backward compatibility across teams that depend on their service.

What DevSecOps practices do you bring to a full stack project, from commit to production?

What they are checking: Whether testing, security scanning and deployment automation are habits rather than someone else's job.
