Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a design decision you made that turned out to be wrong.

What they are checking: Whether they can name one, since a principal designer who cannot is expensive.

As principal designer, how do you bring engineers with you on a standard they did not choose?

What they are checking: Influence without authority, which the role's framing requires.

What would you do

A pipeline fails overnight and the business needs the data by nine. Walk me through your morning.

What they are checking: Operational judgment, which architects sometimes have never had to exercise.

How do you decide between fixing a pipeline properly and getting today's data through?

What they are checking: Judgment about debt, which is where data platforms decay.

How do you work with the business to turn a vague question into a data requirement?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate, which decides whether the platform gets used.

About the work

Walk me through a data lakehouse you designed. What did you get right and what would you change?

What they are checking: Whether they have architected one rather than worked inside someone else's.

Which of AWS Glue, S3, EMR and Lambda have you used in production, and for what?

What they are checking: The posting names all four, so this separates used from listed on a resume.

How do you approach migrating a legacy ETL process to a cloud-native pipeline?

What they are checking: The posting asks them to own both, which is the harder half of the job.

What is different about supply chain data compared with other domains?

What they are checking: The posting names supply chain specifically, and the domain shapes the modeling.

How do you make sure the people consuming the data trust it?

What they are checking: Data quality and lineage, which is what separates a platform from a pile of tables.
