Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you integrated hardware, firmware and software from different teams. What went wrong?

What they are checking: Whether they have handled the messy handoffs between disciplines that system integration depends on.

Tell me about a root cause analysis you led. How did you know you'd found the real cause?

What they are checking: Whether they verify root causes with evidence rather than stopping at the first likely explanation.

What would you do

You've found an integration issue right before a product release. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they assess risk honestly and present options to leadership rather than hiding or overreacting.

How do you decide whether to do a task yourself or delegate it to others on the project?

What they are checking: Whether they use their time well as a mid-career engineer and help develop others.

How do you report progress on a long investigation to managers who aren't technical?

What they are checking: Whether they can summarize complex findings clearly and keep stakeholders confident.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd define the scope and plan for a large systems integration investigation.

What they are checking: Whether they can own a big problem from the start, breaking it into tasks and setting clear goals.

How would you troubleshoot a smart water meter that communicates fine in the lab but drops data in the field?

What they are checking: Whether they think across hardware, firmware, radio and network layers to isolate a real-world failure.

How do you design a system-level test plan for a new metering product?

What they are checking: Whether they cover end-to-end scenarios, edge cases and field conditions, not only unit tests.

What communication protocols or IoT technologies have you worked with?

What they are checking: Whether their experience fits connected metering systems that report data over networks.

How do you document integration decisions so others can understand them later?

What they are checking: Whether they leave clear records that save future teams from repeating the same work.
