Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Walk me through a PCB you designed from schematic to production. What were the hardest tradeoffs?

What they are checking: Whether they have owned a full board design and can explain the decisions behind it.

Tell me about a time you mentored a junior engineer.

What they are checking: Whether they can lift team skills as a senior engineer.

What would you do

A field return shows a failed component on your board. How do you investigate?

What they are checking: Whether they use structured failure analysis and fix root cause in the design.

A key part goes end of life or has a long lead time. How do you respond?

What they are checking: Whether they can redesign or qualify alternatives without hurting reliability.

How do you balance cost targets with reliability on a product that has to work during an outage?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that energy resilience products cannot fail when they are needed most.

About the work

How do you lay out a board that mixes high-power switching with sensitive control signals?

What they are checking: Whether they understand grounding, isolation, and noise control in power electronics.

Generators and controls see heat, vibration, and electrical noise. How do you design for those conditions?

What they are checking: Whether they design for harsh environments that energy equipment faces in the field.

How do you prepare a board for EMC testing, and what do you do if it fails?

What they are checking: Whether they design with compliance in mind and can debug emissions problems.

What do you check in a design review for manufacturability?

What they are checking: Whether they work with manufacturing to avoid boards that are hard to build or test.

How do you do worst-case and thermal analysis on a circuit?

What they are checking: Whether they verify designs with analysis rather than relying only on bench tests.
