Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role is the strategic and operational partner to a vice president of development sciences. Tell me about partnering with a senior leader in that way.

What they are checking: The chief-of-staff shape of the role, with a real example

The posting names advising on priorities, trade-offs and follow-through. Tell me about a trade-off you helped a leadership team make.

What they are checking: Whether they have actually shaped a hard leadership decision, not just tracked it, by framing options and costs clearly for senior people.

You'd shape communications for leadership forums and organization-wide updates. How do you write an update people actually read?

What they are checking: Whether they write short, clear updates built around what readers need, because communication from a leadership office sets the tone for everyone.

You'd work on leadership team effectiveness and culture. How do you tell a leadership team their own dynamic is the problem?

What they are checking: Whether they can raise uncomfortable truths with senior leaders tactfully and directly, because a chief-of-staff role is only useful when it is candid.

What would you do

You'd design and facilitate leadership team rhythms, agendas, decision forums and off-sites. What makes a leadership meeting produce a decision rather than a discussion?

What they are checking: Whether they can design meetings with clear inputs and decision owners, since leadership time is expensive and discussion without decisions wastes it.

How do you make a strategy real — what do you actually do the week after it is agreed?

What they are checking: Whether they turn an agreed strategy into owners, deadlines and follow-up right away, since most plans fail in the weeks after approval.

You have no direct authority over most of what you are accountable for. How do you get things finished?

What they are checking: Whether they get results through relationships, clarity and persistence, since this seat owns outcomes without owning the people doing the work.

How do you decide what belongs on the vice president's plate and what does not?

What they are checking: Whether they protect the vice president's time with sound judgment, deciding what truly needs the leader and what others can handle.

This supports development sciences at North Chicago. What would you want to know about the leadership team and the organization before you took it?

What they are checking: Whether they ask about the leaders and culture they would serve, which shows they know fit with people matters in this seat.

About the work

You'd lead financial planning, rolling forecasts, investment tracking and vendor management. Which of those is your strongest, and which would you build support for?

What they are checking: Whether they can honestly name their strengths and gaps across planning, forecasting and vendor work, rather than claiming equal depth everywhere.
