Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a negotiation where you protected an important position without killing the deal.

What they are checking: Commercial legal judgment rather than pure risk aversion.

How do you keep current on policy developments across two legal systems?

What they are checking: Practical habits for a role that depends on being current.

This requires a law degree and bar admission, prefers nine or more years, and requires at least three days a week in office at Abbott Park, Waltham or South San Francisco. Which location, and what would you want to know about the alliance portfolio?

What they are checking: That they read the multi-site requirement and would ask what they would work on.

What would you do

You would interpret complex strategic agreements and give clear advice. How do you give a business client a clear answer when the contract is genuinely ambiguous?

What they are checking: Advising decisively without overstating certainty.

You work across research and development, business development, regulatory, intellectual property, data privacy and commercial. How do you coordinate advice when those functions want different things?

What they are checking: Working a broad internal matrix as counsel.

A business team wants to move quickly on a partnership and the regulatory picture is unsettled. What do you advise?

What they are checking: Counsel under genuine uncertainty, where a clean answer does not exist.

About the work

This role advises on United States and China legal and regulatory frameworks affecting pharmaceutical collaborations. What has changed in that landscape recently that matters most to a company like this?

What they are checking: Current command of a fast-moving area, which is the reason the role exists.

Walk me through the diligence you would want before recommending a collaboration with a China-based biotechnology partner.

What they are checking: Transactional judgment specific to this counterparty type.

You would draft and negotiate amendments, governance documents and dispute resolutions in the post-execution life of an alliance. What goes wrong in alliances after the deal is signed?

What they are checking: Post-execution experience, which most transactional lawyers lack.

You would develop training and guidance on these frameworks. How do you teach a regulatory framework to business people who will not read a memo?

What they are checking: Practical legal education, named as a duty.
