Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a cloud cost optimization you led. What did it save and how did you prove the savings were real?

What they are checking: Whether their savings claims are measured against a sound baseline rather than estimated after the fact.

How do you get engineers to care about cost when their goals are speed and reliability?

What they are checking: Whether they can change behavior through visibility and incentives instead of relying on policy alone.

Tell me about a time you presented a cost recommendation to a senior leader who disagreed. What happened?

What they are checking: Whether they can defend analysis with evidence and adjust gracefully when a leader raises a fair point.

What would you do

Finance says the cloud forecast missed by 20 percent last quarter. How would you find out why and improve it?

What they are checking: Whether they can trace forecast errors to specific drivers and fix the forecasting method, not just the number.

An engineering team is running far over budget but says the spend is critical to a launch. How do you handle that conversation?

What they are checking: Whether they can push for accountability without becoming the person who blocks important work.

Untagged resources make up a large share of the bill. What would you do about it?

What they are checking: Whether they can fix tagging gaps through both enforcement and cleanup, since allocation is useless without them.

About the work

Walk me through how you would build a cost allocation model for cloud spend across many business areas.

What they are checking: Whether they can design tagging, shared-cost splits and showback that business leaders will accept as fair.

How do you decide between reserved instances, savings plans and on-demand pricing for a given workload?

What they are checking: Whether they understand commitment-based discounts and the risk of over-committing to usage that may change.

What does a mature FinOps practice look like to you, and where would you start if a company were early in that journey?

What they are checking: Whether they know the FinOps maturity model well enough to prioritize the steps that matter most first.

How do you measure whether cloud spend is creating business value, not just whether it went down?

What they are checking: Whether they understand unit economics and that lower spend is not always the right goal.
