Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a complex real-world problem you solved in software. How did you approach it?

What they are checking: Whether they break hard problems down methodically and validate their solution.

Tell me about a technical decision you influenced through expertise, not authority.

What they are checking: Whether they can lead technical direction at a senior level by making a strong case.

How do you stay current with autonomy and robotics advances?

What they are checking: Whether they keep learning in a fast-moving field.

What would you do

A feature works in simulation but behaves differently at a mine site. How do you troubleshoot?

What they are checking: Whether they systematically look at sensors, timing and environment differences.

How do you contribute to requirements when product teams aren't sure what they need?

What they are checking: Whether they help shape clear, testable requirements rather than waiting for perfect specs.

How do you keep code quality high when a release date is close?

What they are checking: Whether they protect safety-critical quality under schedule pressure.

About the work

You'd write production software for autonomous heavy equipment in mining and construction. How is that different from writing software for a lab robot?

What they are checking: Whether they understand harsh environments, safety and reliability needs in real field conditions.

How do you design autonomy software so it fails safely?

What they are checking: Whether they think about safe states, fault detection and degraded modes from the start.

How do you test autonomy features before they ever run on a real machine?

What they are checking: Whether they use simulation, replay and unit testing to reduce field risk.

What languages and tools do you use for real-time or embedded software, and why?

What they are checking: Whether they have depth in the tools that production autonomy systems need.
