Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Talbots says relationships are the key to the business. Tell me about a customer you got to know well enough that she came back asking for you.

What they are checking: Whether they build repeat clients on purpose, since a specialty store lives on the same women returning season after season.

Tell me about a time you suggested something extra to a customer and it actually helped her, not just the sale.

What they are checking: Whether they add items because they complete an outfit, which is how gracious service and sales goals live together.

One of our values is that we win as a team. Describe a time you helped a coworker hit a goal even though it did not count for you.

What they are checking: Whether they share customers and credit, since a small store team falls apart when associates compete for sales.

Holiday weekends at a mall like Fox River get very busy. Tell me about working through a rush and how you kept service from slipping.

What they are checking: Whether they stay calm and courteous under volume, since the busiest days are when stores make or lose their month.

What would you do

A woman walks in at Fox River Mall and says she just needs something for a work event but hates shopping. How do you start that conversation?

What they are checking: Whether they can ease a reluctant shopper into a real conversation instead of reciting a greeting script.

We carry a full range of sizes for every body type. How do you help a customer who is frustrated that nothing she tries on fits the way she hoped?

What they are checking: Whether they can handle a sensitive fit moment with tact so the customer leaves feeling respected rather than discouraged.

The item she wants is not in her size here. What do you do before she walks out the door?

What they are checking: Whether they think to use omni-channel tools like ordering online or checking other stores to save the sale.

It is a quiet weekday afternoon with no customers in the store. What do you work on?

What they are checking: Whether they take initiative on recovery, restocking and floor sets without being told, which shows how they use paid time.

A regular customer asks you to hold an item past the hold policy because she is a good customer. How do you handle that?

What they are checking: Whether they can protect a relationship while still following store policy, the integrity and transparency the posting names.

About the work

Talbots talks about modern classic style that is timeless and timely. How would you explain the difference to a customer holding two blazers?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the brand's look well enough to guide a choice instead of just saying both look nice.

What would you tell a customer about why Talbots quality is worth the price?

What they are checking: Whether they can talk about fabric, fit and craftsmanship in plain words, which is what turns browsing into buying.
