Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a new team or setting. What helped you?

What they are checking: Adaptability and humility, which the posting names as what float nurses develop.

How do you build relationships with staff on units you only work on sometimes?

What they are checking: Whether they can earn trust as an outsider, which affects how much help they get on a busy shift.

This role rotates 12-hour days and nights with every third weekend. How do you manage that?

What they are checking: Realistic planning for a rotating schedule that affects rest and safety.

If you are a newer nurse, what kind of support do you need from preceptors to float safely?

What they are checking: Self-awareness about readiness, since the role accepts new graduates with prior patient care experience.

Tell me about a time you felt frustrated being moved around or given a hard assignment. How did you respond?

What they are checking: Whether they stay professional and flexible when the job's core demand is being sent where needed.

What would you do

Float pool nurses go wherever the hospital needs them. How do you get oriented quickly to a unit you have not worked on in weeks?

What they are checking: Their habits for safe, fast orientation, since floating fails when nurses guess at unit routines.

You are floated to a unit where you are not comfortable with an assignment. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they speak up about competency limits instead of quietly taking a risky assignment.

A patient you just took over looks worse than the report you got. What do you do?

What they are checking: Trusting their own assessment over handoff and escalating early with the rapid response system.

About the work

How do you prioritize when you walk into a full assignment of patients you have never met?

What they are checking: Whether they use a clear method to find the sickest patient first and plan the shift.

You are floated to a med-surg unit and a patient needs a medication you rarely give. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Safe medication practice, including checking references and pharmacy rather than guessing.
