About your past

Why is the emergency department your long-term goal?

This program starts you on med-surg floors with ER immersion shifts every six weeks. How do you feel about building your foundation on the floors first?

Tell me about a clinical experience in school where a patient's condition changed quickly. What did you do?

What they are checking: How they react under pressure and whether they escalate appropriately as a new nurse.

Tell me about a time you got critical feedback from an instructor or preceptor. How did you respond?

What they are checking: Coachability, since the program depends on working with professional development nurses.

How do you handle the emotional side of caring for very sick or dying patients?

What they are checking: Whether they have ways to cope, since the ER exposes nurses to hard situations often.

What do you think will be the hardest part of moving from student to nurse?

What they are checking: Realistic expectations about the transition to practice.

What would you do

What would you do on your first shift if you felt overwhelmed?

What they are checking: Self-awareness and willingness to ask for help, which keeps new graduates and patients safe.

During an ER immersion shift, how would you build relationships with the team you will eventually join?

What they are checking: Initiative in using immersion shifts to learn the department's people, policies and patients.

About the work

A patient's blood pressure is 82 over 50 and they seem a little confused. What are your first steps?

What they are checking: Basic recognition of instability and knowing to assess and call for help right away.

How do you prioritize when you have several patients who all need something at the same time?

What they are checking: Whether they know a prioritization framework like airway, breathing and circulation.
