Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you noticed a patient was getting worse before the numbers showed it. What tipped you off and what did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they trust their clinical judgment enough to escalate early instead of waiting for a clear crisis.

Tell me about a time you supported a patient or family through bad news or the decision to move to comfort care.

What they are checking: Whether they can stay present and steady in end-of-life moments, which come up often on an oncology unit.

This is a part-time night position. How do you stay current on your patients and the unit when you are not there every week?

What they are checking: Whether they take responsibility for catching up on changes so part-time hours do not lead to gaps in care.

What would you do

You need to call the on-call physician at 3 a.m. about a patient's pain that isn't controlled. How do you make that call useful?

What they are checking: Whether they can give a clear, organized report like SBAR so a tired provider can act on it quickly.

A family member is angry at night because they feel no one is telling them anything. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can calm a scared family and share what they are allowed to share without getting defensive.

What does a good handoff at 7 a.m. look like to you?

What they are checking: Whether they see handoff as a safety step and pass on pending labs, concerns and family issues, not just vitals.

About the work

Walk me through how you assess an oncology patient at the start of a night shift. What are you looking for first?

What they are checking: Whether they prioritize the things that turn quickly in cancer patients, like fever, bleeding and airway, over routine checks.

A patient who is neutropenic spikes a temperature of 38.3 at 2 a.m. What do you do in the next hour?

What they are checking: Whether they treat neutropenic fever as an emergency and know cultures and antibiotics cannot wait until morning rounds.

How do you handle chemotherapy safely on the floor, from checking the order to disposing of the waste?

What they are checking: Whether they follow hazardous drug precautions every time, protecting both the patient and the staff around them.

How do you manage pain for a cancer patient who is already on high doses of opioids and still hurting?

What they are checking: Whether they understand opioid tolerance and advocate for relief without being careless about sedation and breathing.

How do you teach a patient about infection precautions or managing side effects when they are exhausted and overwhelmed?

What they are checking: Whether they can keep patient education short, practical and matched to what the person can take in right now.
