Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you had to work fast and stay accurate at the same time.

What they are checking: Whether they stay composed and precise under time pressure, because speed without accuracy in emergency care leads directly to dangerous mistakes.

How do you keep families informed in a busy ED?

What they are checking: Whether they keep families informed even when busy, because regular updates reduce anxiety and build trust during frightening emergency visits.

Tell me about a difficult case that stayed with you. How did you cope?

What they are checking: Whether they have healthy ways to cope with cases that stay with them, because emotional strain is a major reason emergency nurses burn out.

What would you do

Several patients arrive at once, including chest pain, a child with a high fever and an injured adult. How do you triage?

What they are checking: Whether their triage judgment puts the sickest patient first, because chest pain, a feverish child and an injury each carry different hidden risks.

How do you handle a patient who becomes aggressive in the ED?

What they are checking: Whether they can de-escalate aggression while keeping patients and staff safe, because violence in the emergency department is a real and recurring risk.

How do you care for a patient with a behavioral health crisis while they wait for placement?

What they are checking: Compassion and safety for patients who may be in the ED for long periods.

About the work

Walk me through your first actions for a patient arriving with stroke symptoms.

What they are checking: Whether they know the time-sensitive steps of stroke protocols, because quick action in the first minutes decides which treatments are still possible.

What are your priorities when a trauma patient arrives?

What they are checking: Whether they know trauma assessment priorities and their team role, because trauma care depends on a fast, organized response from everyone involved.

How do you make sure medications are given safely in a fast-paced environment?

What they are checking: Whether their medication safety habits hold up when things move fast, because rushed emergency settings are where dosing errors most often happen.

How do you hand off a patient being admitted to the inpatient unit?

What they are checking: Whether they give admitting units a clear, complete handoff, because gaps in that report can delay care once the patient leaves the ED.
