Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you recognized a patient getting worse before anyone else did. What tipped you off?

What they are checking: Clinical judgment and the confidence to escalate on subtle changes rather than waiting for vitals to crash.

You're working a 7p to 7a and get slammed at 3 a.m. How do you stay sharp and safe?

What they are checking: Self-awareness about fatigue on night and rotating shifts, which affects error rates.

How do you feel about the on-call shifts and every-other-weekend rotation, and how do you make that schedule work?

What they are checking: Honest readiness for the posted schedule, since reliability matters a lot in a small department.

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a provider's order in the ER. What did you do?

What they are checking: Patient advocacy and the ability to question an order respectfully and through the right channels.

What would you do

You're in a small ER and three patients come in at once, one of them a child struggling to breathe. How do you prioritize and get help?

What they are checking: Rapid prioritization and willingness to call for help early in a rural setting with limited staff.

A patient needs a higher level of care and transfer will take hours. How do you keep them safe in the meantime?

What they are checking: Whether they can stabilize and monitor a critical patient while coordinating transfer from a smaller hospital.

A family member is angry and demanding while you're caring for another critical patient. How do you handle them?

What they are checking: Calm communication that de-escalates without taking time and attention away from the sickest patient.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd assign an ESI level to a patient with chest pain who looks comfortable and has normal vitals.

What they are checking: Whether they apply ESI version 4 by risk and expected resources, not by how sick the patient appears.

How does your assessment change for a newborn, a toddler, an adult and a frail older patient?

What they are checking: Comfort with the full age range the posting names, since normal values and warning signs differ a lot.

What is your role in a code, and how do you keep things organized when it's chaotic?

What they are checking: ACLS and PALS readiness and whether they understand roles, closed-loop communication and documentation in a resuscitation.

How do you move quickly through allergies, medications and history with a patient who is in pain or confused?

What they are checking: Time management and focused questioning, which the posting calls crucial in the first minutes of care.
