Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role is with SSM Health at Home. How is respiratory care in a patient's home different from care in a hospital?

What they are checking: Whether they understand working alone in a home, without a team down the hall, and adjusting to the setting.

How do you keep the rest of the care team, including the physician, informed about how your patients are doing?

What they are checking: Coordinating care with other providers so changes in treatment are made on time and nothing falls through.

The role includes an on-call rotation with nights, weekends and holidays. How have you handled call in past jobs?

What they are checking: Whether they can commit to on-call duty and respond reliably when a home patient needs help after hours.

How do you stay organized when you're driving between homes, managing equipment and documenting visits?

What they are checking: Self-management, since home care has no charge nurse watching the day and depends on the clinician's own system.

Tell me about a time a family member was overwhelmed by their loved one's breathing equipment. What did you do?

What they are checking: Patience and teaching skill with caregivers who will run the equipment once the therapist leaves.

What would you do

You arrive and a patient's oxygen saturation is lower than usual and they seem short of breath. What do you do?

What they are checking: Recognizing decline and knowing when to adjust within orders, call the physician or send the patient to the ED.

A patient isn't following the treatment plan and keeps taking their oxygen off. How do you approach that?

What they are checking: Working with the patient to understand why, rather than lecturing, and reporting compliance concerns to the care team.

About the work

Walk me through a first home visit for a patient newly set up on home oxygen.

What they are checking: Assessment, safe equipment setup, oxygen fire safety and teaching the patient and family to use it correctly.

The posting says you'll assess patients and develop a plan of care based on diagnosis. How do you build a plan for a COPD patient at home?

What they are checking: Turning an assessment and physician order into a practical home plan that keeps the patient out of the hospital.

How do you teach a patient to use a CPAP or BiPAP machine so they actually keep using it?

What they are checking: Patient education that addresses comfort and fit, since many patients quit using equipment they do not understand.
