Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about research software you built or improved. Who used it and what changed for them?

What they are checking: Whether they have real experience helping researchers, not just writing code alone.

Tell me about a time you had to learn a new scientific domain to help with a project.

What they are checking: Whether they are curious and can work across disciplines as RCC requires.

What would you do

How do you gather requirements from a researcher who isn't sure exactly what they need?

What they are checking: Whether they can ask good questions and iterate with scientists.

You're supporting several research groups with competing deadlines. How do you prioritize?

What they are checking: Whether they can manage competing requests fairly and communicate tradeoffs.

How would you teach a workshop on good coding practices for graduate students?

What they are checking: Whether they can contribute to RCC's training mission in a practical way.

About the work

A researcher hands you a script that works on their laptop but fails on the cluster. How do you approach it?

What they are checking: Whether they understand HPC environments, schedulers and dependency issues.

How do you bring software engineering practices into research code without slowing the science down?

What they are checking: Whether they can apply testing and version control at the right level for research work.

Walk me through how you'd speed up a slow Python data analysis that runs on large files.

What they are checking: Whether they profile first and know options like vectorization, parallelism and better file formats.

How would you use GPUs or parallel computing for a research workload?

What they are checking: Whether they know when HPC and GPU resources actually help and how to use them.

How do you make research software reproducible?

What they are checking: Whether they use environments, containers and documentation so results can be repeated.
