Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell us about an experiment that kept failing. How did you figure out why?

What they are checking: Their troubleshooting process and persistence at the bench.

What do you want to have accomplished by the end of this postdoc for your own career?

What they are checking: Whether they have clear goals that fit the position, such as publications and teaching experience.

What would you do

A quarter of this role is teaching and mentoring undergraduates. How would you train a first-year student to do microinjections?

What they are checking: Whether they can break down difficult lab skills for beginners at a primarily undergraduate institution.

An undergraduate in the lab gets a result that looks too good to be true. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they verify surprising data carefully and teach students research integrity.

About the work

The project looks at how bmal1 and rev-erb alpha affect the metabolic shift during dorsal mesoderm specification in Xenopus. What would be your first experiment to build on the preliminary findings?

What they are checking: Whether they can think like an independent scientist about the actual research question.

What experience do you have with Xenopus embryos or another model organism, and how quickly do you pick up new techniques?

What they are checking: Whether their lab skills transfer, since the posting says relevant techniques will be trained.

How would you design a loss-of-function experiment and control for off-target effects?

What they are checking: Whether they understand experimental rigor and controls in molecular genetic work.

How do you account for circadian timing when you're collecting embryos for gene expression work?

What they are checking: Whether they see how time of collection can confound circadian experiments.

This is an NSF RUI-funded position. What do you think makes research at a primarily undergraduate institution different?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the RUI model blends research progress with undergraduate training.

How do you keep your lab notebook and data organized so someone else could repeat your work?

What they are checking: Whether they practice reproducible, well-documented research.
