Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a class project or job where you had to dig through messy data to find a real answer.

What they are checking: Whether they can work patiently with imperfect data, which is what plant failure records usually look like.

Tell me about a time you were given a project with unclear goals. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they ask good questions and set their own direction, which interns need when engineers are busy.

Tell me about a time you got feedback that changed how you were doing something.

What they are checking: Whether they are coachable and take feedback well, which shapes how much they will grow in an internship.

What would you do

You need information from a maintenance mechanic who's been at the plant for 20 years and is busy. How do you approach them?

What they are checking: Whether they show respect for floor experience and can build trust with the people who know the equipment best.

At the end of the summer you'll present what you worked on. How would you make it useful to the plant after you leave?

What they are checking: Whether they think about handing off work in a form others can actually keep using.

About the work

What's the difference between preventive and predictive maintenance, and when would you choose one over the other?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the basic ideas behind reliability work well enough to contribute from the first week.

If I handed you six months of downtime records for a packaging line, how would you figure out where to focus first?

What they are checking: Whether they know to sort failures by frequency and impact, such as with a Pareto chart, before chasing fixes.

What tools or methods do you know for finding the root cause of a failure, like 5 Whys or a fishbone diagram?

What they are checking: Whether they have a structured way to get past the obvious symptom to the real cause.

How might condition monitoring like vibration analysis or thermography help a food plant cut downtime?

What they are checking: Whether they are curious about practical tools for spotting failures before they happen.

Why does equipment reliability matter more in a food plant than it might in some other kinds of manufacturing?

What they are checking: Whether they connect downtime to product loss, food safety and customer orders, not just cost.
