Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you taught another nurse something about IV care or line maintenance.

What they are checking: Whether they act as a resource for the units, which a vascular access nurse does as much as placing lines.

This is a part-time role with every fourth weekend. What draws you to a specialty team like vascular access?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the role is focused and procedural, and want that rather than a general floor assignment.

What would you do

A floor nurse pages you for a third IV attempt on a patient who's anxious and in pain. How do you handle the visit?

What they are checking: Calming a scared patient and working with the floor team while still placing the line safely.

You've tried twice and can't get access on a patient who needs antibiotics now. What do you do?

What they are checking: Knowing when to stop, escalate and consider other access options rather than continuing to stick the patient.

How do you prioritize when several units page you for access at the same time?

What they are checking: Triaging by urgency, like a code or a time-critical medication, instead of first come, first served.

About the work

Walk me through how you assess a patient's veins before placing a peripheral IV, especially someone who's been stuck many times already.

What they are checking: Whether they plan the best site and approach instead of making repeated blind attempts on a hard stick.

How comfortable are you with ultrasound-guided IV placement? Talk me through your technique.

What they are checking: Real hands-on skill with ultrasound guidance, which is a core expectation for a dedicated vascular access nurse.

How do you decide whether a patient needs a peripheral IV, a midline or a PICC?

What they are checking: Matching the device to the therapy, its length and the patient's veins, which protects veins and lowers infection risk.

You're called to a patient whose PICC line isn't drawing back blood. What are you checking?

What they are checking: Troubleshooting a line problem step by step, including position, occlusion and when to use a declotting agent.

What do you do to prevent central line infections when you place or maintain a line?

What they are checking: Knowing the bundle practices that prevent CLABSI, which are tracked closely and carry real harm for patients.
