Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time a post-surgical patient deteriorated on your shift. How did you catch it and what did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they trust their assessment and call for help early, such as a rapid response.

How do you work with LPNs and CNAs on a night shift so the right tasks go to the right people?

What they are checking: Understanding delegation and scope, since the posting stresses a team of RNs, LPNs and CNAs.

This is a nights position with every fourth weekend and every other holiday. How do you stay sharp and safe on long night shifts?

What they are checking: Whether they have honest, workable habits for fatigue, which affects medication and assessment errors.

What would you do

It's 3 a.m. and your hip replacement patient's calf is swollen and tender. What do you do?

What they are checking: Recognizing a possible DVT and escalating promptly instead of waiting for morning rounds.

An elderly patient after surgery becomes confused and keeps trying to get out of bed. How do you keep them safe?

What they are checking: Recognizing post-op delirium and using fall prevention without jumping straight to restraints.

You have five patients and two need pain medication, one needs a dressing change and one is calling about the bathroom. How do you prioritize?

What they are checking: Clear prioritization thinking that puts safety and urgency ahead of whoever asks loudest.

About the work

2 Surgical cares for post-surgical and orthopedic patients. What are the first things you assess when a post-op ortho patient arrives from PACU?

What they are checking: Whether they have a reliable post-op assessment routine covering airway, pain, bleeding and neurovascular checks.

How do you manage pain for a patient after joint surgery while watching for oversedation from opioids?

What they are checking: Balancing comfort with respiratory safety, which is one of the most common post-op risks on nights.

What do you watch for in a fresh surgical incision and drain output, and what would make you call the surgeon?

What they are checking: Knowing normal from abnormal wound and drain findings well enough to escalate correctly.

How do you teach a patient going home after orthopedic surgery so they actually follow through?

What they are checking: Whether they use teach-back and plain language so discharge teaching prevents readmissions.
