Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Your background is Med/Surg, ICU, ED or perioperative. Tell me how that experience prepares you for a procedural unit like ours.
What they are checking: Whether they can connect past skills to fast turnover, sedation monitoring and short patient contact instead of assuming it is all the same.
Tell me about a time you caught something in a patient's history or meds that changed the plan for a procedure.
What they are checking: Whether they actually read the chart and speak up, since a missed blood thinner or allergy can cause real harm in a scope.
Tell me about a time you disagreed with a physician about a patient's readiness for a procedure or for discharge.
What they are checking: Whether they can advocate for the patient respectfully in a physician-heavy setting without backing down too easily.
What would you do
You are monitoring a patient under moderate sedation during an EGD and their oxygen saturation drops into the 80s. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they act quickly on airway basics and speak up to the physician instead of waiting for the number to recover.
A patient waking up in recovery after a colonoscopy says they have severe belly pain that is getting worse. How do you handle it?
What they are checking: Whether they can tell normal gas discomfort from signs of perforation and escalate before discharge.
The schedule is Monday through Friday with rotating call. Tell me how you would handle being called in overnight for an emergent GI bleed.
What they are checking: Whether they are honestly ready for call and can set up quickly for an unstable patient with a small team.
Inpatients and outpatients share our rooms, and a sick inpatient gets added on while outpatients are waiting. How do you keep the day moving and keep everyone informed?
What they are checking: Whether they can manage flow and communicate delays kindly without cutting corners on safety.
About the work
Walk me through how you would prepare an adult patient for a screening colonoscopy, from the moment they arrive until they go into the procedure room.
What they are checking: Whether they know the pre-procedure checks, like prep quality, consent, allergies and anticoagulants, that keep a case from being canceled or going wrong.
Our lab does ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound and bronchoscopies as well as routine scopes. What do you know about the extra risks of ERCP and EUS compared with a colonoscopy?
What they are checking: Whether they understand that some procedures carry higher risks, like pancreatitis or perforation, and need closer watching afterward.
How do you make sure a scope and its accessories are handled safely between cases, and what is your role versus the GI techs?
What they are checking: Whether they respect reprocessing and infection control and understand how nurses and GI techs split the work.
What would you teach a patient being discharged after a polypectomy, and how do you make sure they actually understood it?
What they are checking: Whether they cover delayed bleeding, diet and when to call, and use teach-back since sedated patients forget a lot.
