Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you adapted quickly to a new team or environment.

What they are checking: Whether they are flexible and confident enough to thrive moving between units every shift.

How do you build trust with unit staff who don't know you when you float to their floor?

What they are checking: Whether they can fit into a team quickly and be someone the regular staff want back.

Tell me about a time you noticed a safety risk on a unit that wasn't your home unit. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they speak up even as an outsider, since float nurses often see things regular staff miss.

What would you do

You arrive for a 7a shift and learn you're going to a unit you've only worked once. What do you do in your first 30 minutes?

What they are checking: Whether they find resources fast, ask the charge nurse what's different, and get safely into the shift.

You're assigned a patient type you're not comfortable with. How do you handle that?

What they are checking: Whether they speak up for safety and ask for help instead of quietly taking on something unsafe.

Your patient becomes suddenly confused and their blood pressure drops. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they recognize a deteriorating patient and call a rapid response without hesitating.

How do you handle a unit that seems to give the float nurse the toughest assignment every time?

What they are checking: Whether they can raise fairness concerns professionally without creating conflict.

About the work

What patient populations have you cared for, and which ones would you need more support with?

What they are checking: Whether they know their strengths and limits honestly, which is critical for a float nurse.

How do you prioritize five patients when you've never met any of them and report was rushed?

What they are checking: Whether they can quickly sort patients by risk and stability with incomplete information.

How do you stay current on skills and policies across many different units?

What they are checking: Whether they take ownership of learning, since float nurses need a wider skill set than most.
