Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about an autonomous or AI-driven research project you led. What did the automation actually change?

What they are checking: Whether they have established expertise and real results with autonomous platforms.

Which scientific problem in materials or chemistry would you aim your program at first, and why?

What they are checking: Whether they have a clear vision aligned with Argonne and DOE missions.

How do you mentor postdocs and early-career researchers in a fast-moving field?

What they are checking: Whether they can grow people as part of leading a research program.

What would you do

How would you build an independently funded research program here within two to three years?

What they are checking: Whether they have a realistic plan for funding, which the posting expects.

Your autonomous lab keeps exploring the same narrow area. How do you diagnose that?

What they are checking: Whether they understand exploration problems and biases in closed-loop systems.

How would you collaborate with existing autonomous lab facilities while building new platforms?

What they are checking: Whether they can use shared resources well and add to them.

About the work

How would you use generative models for inverse design, and how would you check their suggestions are real?

What they are checking: Whether they can use generative AI critically and validate it with experiments.

Where does reinforcement learning or an agent-based approach truly help in experimentation, and where is it overkill?

What they are checking: Whether they can match methods to problems instead of following trends.

How would you connect HPC simulations, data infrastructure and lab robots into one workflow?

What they are checking: Whether they can design integrated systems across computing and experiment.

What is a digital twin for a lab experiment, and how would you know if it's accurate enough to trust?

What they are checking: Whether they understand simulation-augmented AI and its validation.

How do you make sure data from autonomous experiments is reusable and trusted by others?

What they are checking: Whether they think about data quality and sharing as part of the research.
