Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you kept several research efforts moving at once when none of the people doing the work reported to you.

What they are checking: Influence without authority in an academic setting, which is the core of this job.

You would make budget recommendations in coordination with the group's finance lead. Tell me about a budget decision you influenced without owning the budget.

What they are checking: Working alongside a finance partner rather than around them.

This sits across two named initiatives — Human-Centered Weather Forecasting and the AI for Climate Initiative — on a hybrid arrangement, asking two to five years of experience. What would you want clear about how the two initiatives divide your time?

What they are checking: That they noticed the split mandate and would ask about it before starting.

What would you do

You would plan multi-institutional convenings with industry and government partners. Walk me through how you would organize one from a blank page.

What they are checking: Actual convening experience versus general event coordination.

You scope new project areas and partnerships. How do you tell a promising partnership from one that will consume time and produce nothing?

What they are checking: Judgment about which opportunities deserve the group's scarce attention.

Two research groups in the initiative want the same staff time for different deliverables. How do you resolve it?

What they are checking: Allocating a shared resource where both claimants are senior to them.

A government partner goes quiet for weeks on something you need. What do you do?

What they are checking: Persistence across institutions that move at their own speed.

About the work

The posting asks for enough technical fluency in AI weather forecasting to coordinate scientific meetings. How much do you need to understand to be useful in a room of researchers?

What they are checking: Self-awareness about where a program manager's technical depth should sit.

The role includes drafting reports for grants and funders and supporting proposal development. What makes a progress report to a funder good rather than merely complete?

What they are checking: Familiarity with the grant lifecycle and a funder's reading.

Weather and climate work draws public and press attention. How do you communicate a research result to a non-scientific audience without overstating it?

What they are checking: Care with public communication, which the posting explicitly names.
