whether the candidate can apply discipline consistently under a labor contract without escalating conflict

Describe a time you had a disagreement with a union steward or with the union over how a policy should be applied. How did it get resolved?
ability to hold the line on standards while keeping the relationship workable
Tell me about a changeover or cycle time problem you improved. What did you change and how much did it save?
concrete CI experience with numbers attached, not just familiarity with lean vocabulary
Tell me about a time you had to deliver bad news to site leadership, like a schedule miss or a quality escape. How did you frame it?
honesty and clarity in upward communication rather than spin
Technical
Walk me through how you'd troubleshoot a CNC part that's coming out of tolerance mid-shift. What do you check first?
actual hands-on machining knowledge versus someone who has only managed machinists from a distance
How do you read and use an SQDIP board day to day, and what do you do when productivity is green but quality is red?
fluency with the specific daily management system this plant runs on, not just familiarity with the acronym
What's your experience with SAP or an MES system for tracking production, and what do you actually pull from it on a normal day?
real system fluency versus a resume keyword
How do you build and use a skills matrix to plan staffing and cross-training on your line?
whether they actually manage workforce flexibility proactively or scramble when someone calls out
What does a first-piece approval process look like on your line, and what's your role when a part fails that check?
understanding of quality gates and whether they'll stop production when needed versus letting bad parts run
Situational
Say you've got a machine down, a shift about to end, and the incoming supervisor doesn't know the history. How do you handle the handoff?
discipline around communication and whether problems get lost between shifts
If you had a skilled operator who's constantly cutting corners on standard work but hitting numbers, what would you do?
whether they'll trade discipline for short-term output or actually enforce the process
Picture this: three operators call in on the same shift and you're behind on a customer order. Walk me through what you do in the first hour.
prioritization and composure under a realistic staffing crunch
