Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time a payment defect reached production. What did you do and what changed afterward?

What they are checking: Whether they handle incidents calmly and improve the process so it does not repeat.

Tell me about a roadmap you owned. How did you decide what went in the next quarter?

What they are checking: Whether they have truly owned a roadmap and can explain the reasoning behind its order.

What would you do

A scheme rule change lands with a fixed deadline. How do you turn it into requirements the delivery team can build?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate regulatory change into clear, testable stories on time.

How do you work with compliance and sanctions screening teams when defining a new payment flow?

What they are checking: Whether they bring control partners in early instead of treating them as a final checkpoint.

Engineers in another time zone keep misreading your requirements. What do you change?

What they are checking: Whether they take responsibility for clarity and adjust how they write and communicate requirements.

About the work

Walk me through how CHAPS, Bacs and Faster Payments differ in settlement timing, limits and typical use.

What they are checking: Whether they really know UK clearing schemes well enough to act as the subject matter expert.

What changes when a payments hub moves to ISO 20022 messaging, and where do the hard parts usually show up?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the data and mapping work behind ISO 20022 migration, not just the headline.

How would you integrate a UK payments hub with the general ledger and reconciliation systems?

What they are checking: Whether they think about end-to-end flow, including posting and reconciliation, which is where errors hurt.

How do you prioritize a backlog when compliance work, client features and tech debt all compete?

What they are checking: Whether they can make and defend backlog trade-offs in a regulated payments setting.

How does SWIFT fit alongside the domestic UK schemes in a payments hub, and what has to be different about it?

What they are checking: Whether they understand cross-border messaging and how it differs from domestic clearing.
