Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

You'll direct Press Helpers. Tell me about a time you had to tell someone what to do when you weren't their boss.

What they are checking: Whether they can direct helpers clearly and respectfully without a formal supervisor title.

Tell me about a time you had to set up a job you weren't fully sure about. Who did you go to and what did you learn?

What they are checking: Whether they ask for help during setups when unsure, which the posting signals by saying setup is done with assistance.

How do you stay alert on a 12-hour night shift when the press is running smoothly and nothing much is happening?

What they are checking: Whether they stay attentive during long quiet stretches, which is when print defects slip through.

What would you do

Halfway through a run you see the color drifting from the approved standard. Walk me through what you do.

What they are checking: Their troubleshooting approach and whether they stop to correct rather than letting off-spec print run.

A helper isn't bringing materials for setup on time and it's slowing you down. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Ability to fix a workflow problem with a coworker directly and calmly instead of complaining or doing everything alone.

You notice a print defect that you think started before your shift. What do you do with that information?

What they are checking: Honesty and follow-through on quality problems even when they are not their fault.

About the work

Tell me about your experience with cylinder-type printing presses. What kinds of jobs and materials have you run?

What they are checking: Real hands-on press experience versus general machine operation, since the pay reflects skilled printing work.

While the press is running, what are you watching to make sure print quality is holding?

What they are checking: Whether they know to monitor registration, color, ink density and defects continuously, not just at setup.

How do you approach cleaning the press during a job change so the next job starts on time and clean?

What they are checking: Understanding that changeover cleaning affects both speed and the quality of the next job.

What safety risks do you think about most around a running press, and how do you protect yourself?

What they are checking: Awareness of nip points, solvents and lockout so they do not reach into moving equipment.
