Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a device you built and characterized. What surprised you about its real performance?

What they are checking: Whether they have hands-on lab experience and learn from the gap between design and reality.

This role asks you to drive the project independently. Tell me about a time you led research with little direction.

What they are checking: Whether they can set goals and make progress without needing step-by-step guidance.

How do you work with senior researchers when you disagree about the direction of an experiment?

What they are checking: Whether they can share ideas confidently while respecting the group's experience.

What would you do

Your device performs well on the bench but fails during beamtime. What do you do with the limited beam hours you have?

What they are checking: How they troubleshoot under pressure and make the most of scarce synchrotron time.

About the work

How would you design a MEMS oscillator that can be driven by a storage-ring RF signal and stay synchronized with the X-ray pulses?

What they are checking: Whether they understand resonance, phase locking and timing at the scale needed for pulse manipulation.

What's your experience simulating MEMS devices, and which tools have you used?

What they are checking: Whether they can model mechanical and electrical behavior before fabricating devices.

Highly nonlinear oscillators can behave unpredictably. How would you approach controlling one precisely?

What they are checking: Whether they can design feedback and control strategies for nonlinear dynamics, a core part of this project.

Walk me through how you'd plan a time-resolved X-ray experiment using a MEMS-based optic.

What they are checking: Whether they can design a beamline experiment, including timing, detectors and what to measure.

You've read Chen et al. on photonic micro-systems at 300 picoseconds. Where do you see the next step for this work?

What they are checking: Whether they have engaged with the group's publications and can think about where the research goes next.

How would you measure the timing jitter of a MEMS device driven at RF frequencies?

What they are checking: Whether they know precise measurement methods for fast mechanical devices.

The full job description

As published by Argonne National Laboratory.

A postdoctoral position is immediately available at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of ultrafast microscale photonics and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices for X-ray optics at synchrotron radiation facilities and other accelerator-based photon sources. This project focuses on developing highly nonlinear MEMS-based oscillators driven by storage-ring radio-frequency (RF) signals to enable advanced manipulation of X-ray pulses. Background information on the project can be found in the publications listed below. Primary responsibilities include: • Designing and simulating MEMS devices • Testing and characterizing device performance • Developing feedback and control strategies for precise MEMS operation • Designing and carrying out time-resolved X-ray experiments using MEMS-based X-ray optics We are seeking highly motivated candidates who can drive the project independently while working closely with senior members of the research group. The initial appointment is typically for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year, contingent upon project progress and funding availability. Relevant Publications: 1. P.
