Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a synthesis that didn't work for months. How did you get it to work, or decide to stop?

What they are checking: How they handle persistence and judgment in hard synthetic research.

Tell me about working in a multidisciplinary team. How did your work connect to others'?

What they are checking: Whether they collaborate well with scientists from different backgrounds on a shared program.

How would you explain why chemical recycling matters to someone outside chemistry?

What they are checking: Whether they can communicate research clearly, which the posting lists as a key duty.

What would you do

Your new recyclable polymer has great recycling yields but weak mechanical properties. What do you do next?

What they are checking: Whether they can balance properties and recyclability instead of chasing one number.

A kinetic result contradicts a mechanism your team has proposed. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they follow the data and raise it honestly, even when it is inconvenient.

About the work

What design features make a polymer chemically recyclable back to monomer, and what tradeoffs come with them?

What they are checking: Whether they understand ceiling temperature, thermodynamics and the balance between stability and recyclability.

Walk me through how you'd study the mechanism of an organometallic catalyst using reaction kinetics.

What they are checking: Whether they can design kinetic experiments to tell competing mechanisms apart.

How do you evaluate the thermomechanical properties of a new polymer, and which tests matter most?

What they are checking: Whether they know DSC, TGA, DMA and tensile testing, and what each tells you about real use.

How do you handle air- and moisture-sensitive organometallic compounds safely?

What they are checking: Whether they have real glovebox and Schlenk line skills and good safety habits.

Which characterization techniques would you use to confirm a polymer's structure and molecular weight?

What they are checking: Whether they know NMR, GPC and related methods and their limits.

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory welcomes applications for a Postdoctoral Appointee to join our Polymer Upcycling Team. In this role, you will contribute to a collaborative, multidisciplinary research program focused on the chemical recycling of polymers and organometallic catalysis. You will work alongside scientists with diverse expertise to design, synthesize, and characterize new recyclable polymer systems, while evaluating their thermomechanical properties. The position also offers the opportunity to investigate catalytic reaction mechanisms through reaction kinetics and complementary physical organic and inorganic chemistry approaches. This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career scientist who is passionate about sustainable materials, catalysis, and fundamental mechanistic research. Key Responsibilities • Design, synthesize, and characterize new recyclable polymers • Evaluate the thermomechanical properties of polymeric materials • Conduct research on chemical recycling processes and organometallic catalysis • Perform mechanistic studies using reaction kinetics analysis and related physical organic and inorganic techniques • Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary research team • Communicate research findings clearly through written reports, presentations, and publications Position Requirements • Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years) in field of Polymer Science, Organic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, or a closely related field • Experience in scientific application knowledge and practical laboratory experience • Demonstrated experience in the synthesis and characterization of highly air-sensitive transition metal complexes • Experience in the synthesis of polymeric materials • Strong understanding of kinetics and thermodynamics as they relate to catalysis • Experience designing, conducting, and interpreting experiments to investigate catalytic reaction mechanisms • Proficiency in written and verbal scientific communication • Hands-on experience with analytical techniques such as gel permeation chromatography (GPC), rheology, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork Job Family Postdoctoral Job Profile Postdoctoral Appointee Worker Type Long-Term (Fixed Term) Time Type Full time The expected hiring range for this position is $72,879.00-$121,465.00.
