Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time a synthesis didn't reproduce. What did you change, and how did you prove what caused it?

What they are checking: Experimental discipline and willingness to chase down reproducibility issues.

Describe your most important paper. What was your specific contribution?

What they are checking: Clarity about their own role and ability to explain their research to a supervising scientist.

How do you work with a supervising scientist when you disagree about the next experiment?

What they are checking: Whether they can push back with evidence while respecting the direction of the project.

What would you do

Your coin cells show high capacity fade, but the material looks good under XRD and SEM. How do you find the cause?

What they are checking: Systematic troubleshooting that separates material problems from cell build or testing problems.

You're scheduled for limited beamtime at APS and your samples aren't ready. What do you do?

What they are checking: Planning and judgment around scarce synchrotron access.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd control particle size and morphology of a layered oxide precursor in a continuously stirred tank reactor.

What they are checking: Hands-on understanding of co-precipitation variables like pH, ammonia, stirring and residence time.

What are the main degradation mechanisms in high-nickel layered oxide cathodes, and how would you try to slow them?

What they are checking: Depth on cathode failure modes, which drives the goal of long-life materials.

How do sodium-ion layered oxides differ from lithium-ion ones in structure and failure, and what changes in how you test them?

What they are checking: Whether they can work across both chemistries the project covers, not just one.

Which synchrotron X-ray techniques would you use to study a cathode during synthesis or cycling, and what would each tell you?

What they are checking: Practical knowledge of in situ and operando methods that the posting expects them to lead.

How do you connect a material's physical properties, like tap density or primary particle size, to its electrochemical performance?

What they are checking: Whether they can build structure-property relationships, a stated goal of the role.
