Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you reduced a fracture, repaired a laceration or did another procedure on an anxious child.

What they are checking: Hands-on procedural comfort with kids and the ability to manage pain and fear in the room.

How do you make sure an urgent care visit gets back to the child's primary care doctor?

What they are checking: Whether they close the loop on care, since urgent care is only one stop in a child's medical home.

Describe a time you were wrong about a diagnosis in an acute setting. What did you learn?

What they are checking: Openness about error and whether they've built safety habits like return precautions and follow-up calls.

How do you stay calm and kind on your tenth ear infection of the night?

What they are checking: Stamina and steady bedside manner across high-volume, repetitive shifts that can still hide a sick child.

What would you do

The lobby is full, wait times are climbing and staff are stressed. What do you do as the physician on shift?

What they are checking: Whether they help the team flow under pressure and stay safe rather than rushing every visit.

A parent wants an X-ray for a minor ankle injury that clearly doesn't need one. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Use of decision rules and clear explanation to avoid unnecessary radiation while keeping the parent reassured.

You're working part-time across one or more urgent care clinics. How do you get up to speed on each site's workflow?

What they are checking: Adaptability and humility when moving between clinics with different staff and routines.

About the work

A child arrives at urgent care with fever and a stiff neck. Walk me through your next ten minutes.

What they are checking: Whether they recognize life-threatening illness quickly and move to transfer instead of over-working the case in clinic.

How do you decide what can be managed in urgent care versus sent to the emergency department?

What they are checking: Judgment about the limits of an urgent care setting, which protects children and keeps the ED for true emergencies.

The posting mentions maintaining OSHA standards for clinic compliance. What does that mean for you on a shift?

What they are checking: Awareness of bloodborne pathogen, sharps and safety rules that a physician is expected to model and enforce.

What return precautions do you give a parent of an infant with bronchiolitis being sent home?

What they are checking: Whether discharge teaching is specific enough for a worried parent to know exactly when to come back.
