Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you led a goals-of-care conversation with a family in the ICU. How did it go?

What they are checking: Skill and compassion in hard conversations, which are a large part of critical care medicine.

How do you present a case at a multidisciplinary lung tumor board, and when have you changed your plan because of one?

What they are checking: Openness to the input of thoracic surgery, oncology and radiology rather than working alone.

This is a teaching hospital. How do you supervise residents or APPs in the ICU while still letting them learn?

What they are checking: Teaching style and the balance between supervision and autonomy that keeps patients safe.

What keeps you in a role long term, and what would make you consider leaving?

What they are checking: Fit with a Marshfield practice and an honest view of what sustains them in a demanding specialty.

What would you do

This is a 50:50 pulmonary and critical care split with about seven ICU shifts a month. How do you keep continuity for clinic patients when you are in the unit?

What they are checking: Whether they can run two very different practices without clinic follow-up falling through the cracks.

You are on in the ICU and two patients crash at the same time while you are short a provider. What do you do?

What they are checking: Triage, delegation to APPs and nurses, and staying calm when resources are thin.

About the work

Walk me through your workup of an incidental lung nodule referred to the new nodule clinic.

What they are checking: Guideline-based nodule management and good judgment about surveillance versus biopsy.

How do you decide between navigational bronchoscopy, EBUS, and an IR-guided biopsy for a suspicious lesion?

What they are checking: Procedural judgment using the tools this program has, including EBUS and on-site interventional radiology.

Talk me through how you manage a patient with ARDS on the ventilator in the first 24 hours.

What they are checking: Command of lung-protective ventilation and how they work with respiratory therapists who manage the vents.

How do you decide when a patient on NIPPV needs to be intubated?

What they are checking: Timing judgment, since late intubation and unnecessary intubation both carry real harm.
