Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you had to tell parents their child was getting worse despite everything you were doing.

What they are checking: Whether they can be honest and steady with frightened families without overpromising or retreating into jargon.

Describe a disagreement you had with a surgeon or subspecialist about a shared ICU patient. How did it get resolved?

What they are checking: How they handle conflict in a 40-member department where they will work with the same people for years.

You'd be one of five intensivists. How do you hand off a complex patient so the next person doesn't miss anything?

What they are checking: Whether their handoffs are structured and reliable, since a small group depends on each member's consistency.

What would you do

Our PICU sees about 450 admissions a year with a midnight census around four or five. How do you keep your critical care skills sharp when volume is that modest?

What they are checking: Whether they have a real plan for skill upkeep in a smaller unit, not just reliance on volume.

Call here is one in five and you're not in house at night. Walk me through how you manage a deteriorating child over the phone until you can get to the bedside.

What they are checking: How they direct residents, hospitalists and nurses remotely and know when to drive in without delay.

Marshfield is one of only four accredited children's hospitals in Wisconsin, so some kids arrive after long transports. How do you work with referring rural ERs before the patient gets here?

What they are checking: Whether they can coach a less-resourced team through stabilization and keep the relationship collegial.

If you're finishing fellowship now, which parts of independent practice do you expect to need the most support with in your first year?

What they are checking: Self-awareness about their gaps and willingness to ask for help as a new attending.

About the work

Our intensivists also run sedation for clinic and hospital procedures. How do you approach procedural sedation for a child with a difficult airway or a recent URI?

What they are checking: Their risk screening and airway planning for sedation outside the ICU, where help is farther away.

A child with septic shock isn't responding to fluids and your first vasoactive agent. What are you thinking about next?

What they are checking: Current, organized thinking on refractory shock that a small team can trust at 2 a.m.

How do you decide when a patient needs a service we may not have on site, like ECMO, and should be transferred out?

What they are checking: Judgment about the limits of their own unit and timing transfers before the window closes.
