Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about the last time you had to walk into a clinic you'd never worked in before and start seeing patients that same day. How did you get up to speed?

whether the candidate can function without the ramp-up time a permanent staff member would get, and how they handle unfamiliar clinic layouts and teams

This role covers outpatient sites across Oshkosh and Fond du Lac, and you might not know your schedule until close to the day. How do you personally handle that kind of unpredictability, week to week?

realistic fit with the float lifestyle beyond just saying they're flexible

Tell me about a patient whose treatment plan wasn't working the way you expected. How did you figure that out and what did you change?

clinical reasoning and willingness to adjust plans based on patient response rather than sticking rigidly to the original plan

Tell me about a time you had to give feedback to a coworker, or receive feedback yourself, about patient care. How did that conversation go?

comfort with the peer evaluation and mentoring expectations built into the role

What draws you to a float position specifically, rather than a permanent spot at one clinic?

genuine motivation for the role versus using it as a stopgap, which affects retention

Tell me about a time you had to communicate a change in a patient's status or plan of care to their physician. How did you make sure the message landed clearly?

communication skills with referring physicians, especially important when the PT may not have an existing relationship with that doctor

Technical

Walk me through how you'd evaluate a new outpatient patient referred with a vague musculoskeletal complaint, someone you're seeing for the first time in a clinic that isn't your usual site.

clinical evaluation process and ability to work efficiently without prior patient history or established rapport

What modalities and exercise equipment are you comfortable with, and is there anything you'd need a quick orientation on before using it independently?

honesty about scope of hands-on skills versus overstating competence

How do you approach discharge planning, especially making sure a patient leaves with a home program they can actually follow?

whether they think beyond the clinic visit to real-world patient follow-through

You're treating patients across a fairly wide age range, from kids to older adults. How does your approach change when you move from a pediatric patient to a geriatric one in the same day?

grasp of age-specific care principles mentioned in the job description, not just generic empathy

Situational

Say you float into a clinic and their documentation system or workflow is set up a little differently than the last site you covered. What do you do in the first hour to make sure you don't create problems for the regular staff or the patient's chart?

adaptability to different systems and respect for continuity of care across sites

Picture this: you're covering a site for one day only, and a patient's insurance authorization is about to run out mid-treatment. What do you do?

understanding of insurance authorization rules and whether they'd escalate appropriately rather than guess

If a site you're covering is short-staffed and asks you to take on a heavier caseload than you think is safe, what would you do?

willingness to set boundaries around patient safety versus just going along with pressure
