Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about an algorithm you moved from research code toward something software engineers could deploy. What had to change?

What they are checking: Experience with the research-to-prototype transition the posting asks them to support.

This role can involve up to 15% travel, including international field work to deploy and collect data on sensors. What field data collection have you done, and what went wrong?

What they are checking: Whether they are realistic about field conditions and can adapt when collection does not go as planned.

What would you do

You inherit an existing statistical method used by the group, and the documentation is thin. How do you get it under control?

What they are checking: Discipline in maintaining and documenting others' methods, which the posting lists as a primary duty.

Your model works well on lab data but performs poorly in the field. How do you figure out why?

What they are checking: Ability to reason about domain shift, sensor differences and real-world conditions.

You think a project's direction won't produce useful results for the sponsor. How do you raise it?

What they are checking: Whether they contribute to long-term planning honestly instead of quietly continuing on a weak path.

About the work

You have sensor data from a field test with very few labeled examples. How do you build a model that you can actually trust?

What they are checking: Experience with limited training data, which the posting names directly, and honest handling of uncertainty.

Explain how you'd set up a hypothesis test to decide whether a weak signal is really present above background in noisy detector data.

What they are checking: Solid statistical reasoning about detection and false alarms, central to physical measurement work.

When would you use a Bayesian approach over a frequentist one for experimental data, and what does each tell your customer?

What they are checking: Whether they choose methods for reasons tied to the problem and can explain the results to non-statisticians.

How do you test and evaluate a new algorithm so a sponsor can trust its performance numbers?

What they are checking: Rigor in validation, since intelligence customers will act on the results.

Describe a result from your graduate research that relied on careful physics understanding, not just a statistical tool.

What they are checking: Whether they bring physical intuition to data analysis, which is the point of a physical data scientist.
