Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a proposal or case for support you wrote that led to a gift. What choices in the writing made the difference?

What they are checking: Whether they understand why their own writing works, not just that it was well received.

Tell me about a writing project you ran from idea to finish on your own. How did you set the plan and keep people on deadline?

What they are checking: Whether they can manage projects independently, which the posting treats as equal to writing skill.

Tell me about a time you got tough feedback on a draft. How did you respond?

What they are checking: Whether they can take edits from many reviewers without getting defensive or losing quality.

What would you do

A physician leader reviews your draft and rewrites it full of technical language. The gift officer says it won't land with the donor. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can keep content technically accurate while protecting the persuasive voice, and manage both partners respectfully.

You're writing for five hospital foundations at once. How do you keep each one's voice and priorities straight?

What they are checking: Whether they can organize a large, varied workload without the foundations blurring together.

Three gift officers each need a proposal this week and you can only do two well. How do you decide?

What they are checking: Whether they can weigh gift size, deadlines and relationships and talk openly about tradeoffs.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd turn a clinical program, say a new cardiac service line, into a major gift proposal for a donor who isn't a clinician.

What they are checking: Whether they can translate clinical priorities into an investment case a donor can picture and fund.

How does your writing change between a principal gift proposal and an appeal to annual or mid-level donors?

What they are checking: Whether they know donor motivations shift across the giving cycle and adjust tone, length and ask to match.

How do you write an impact report that's honest about what a gift did, especially when results are early or mixed?

What they are checking: Whether they can keep donor trust through accurate reporting instead of overstating outcomes.

Patient stories are powerful but sensitive. How do you use one in a proposal while respecting privacy and consent?

What they are checking: Whether they understand HIPAA-adjacent limits and the ethics of patient stories in fundraising.

What makes a case for support persuasive to you? Use an example you admire.

What they are checking: Whether they have a real point of view on philanthropic writing beyond general marketing copy.
