Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a sick child you nearly missed. What tipped you off, and what did you change in your practice afterward?

What they are checking: Whether they can talk honestly about diagnostic error, which is the root of patient safety work in emergency medicine.

You train pediatrics, emergency medicine and family medicine residents plus PEM fellows. How do you teach on a busy shift without slowing patient flow?

What they are checking: Whether teaching is built into how they work or treated as something that only happens when it is quiet.

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a consultant or admitting team about a child's disposition. How did it get resolved?

What they are checking: Whether they can advocate for a patient across services while keeping working relationships intact.

Advocacy is one of our missions. Give me an example of an issue affecting children in your community that you have tried to move outside the hospital.

What they are checking: Whether advocacy is something they actually practice, since the section names it alongside clinical care and research.

What would you do

Our ED sees about 78,000 pediatric visits a year. Walk me through how you run a shift when the waiting room is full and two critical patients arrive at once.

What they are checking: Whether they can triage their own attention and delegate to APPs and residents without losing control of the department.

A parent is angry that their child waited three hours for what they believed was an emergency. How do you handle that conversation?

What they are checking: Calm, honest communication with distressed families, which drives both patient experience and complaints in a pediatric ED.

You suspect non-accidental trauma in an infant, and the family is pleading to go home. Walk me through what you do.

What they are checking: Whether they can follow mandated reporting and child protection steps while treating the family with dignity.

About the work

How do you approach pain management in a frightened toddler with a fracture, and where do you think pediatric EDs still undertreat pain?

What they are checking: Pain management is a named scholarly focus here, so they want real clinical opinions, not just protocol recitation.

Walk me through how you assess a teenager who took a hit in a game and now has a headache. When do you image, and what do you send home with the family?

What they are checking: Concussion work is a section priority, and they want to see evidence-based decision rules applied to an actual family conversation.

A child with sickle cell disease arrives with fever and pain. What are your first thirty minutes?

What they are checking: Whether they know the time-sensitive steps for sickle cell fever and pain, a named area of research and quality focus.

What research or quality question would you want to pursue with your protected time, and how would you use our clinical research coordinators to get it done?

What they are checking: Whether they have a real scholarly direction that fits an academic section rather than a vague interest in research.

How do you think about prehospital care and the handoff from EMS for pediatric patients?

What they are checking: Prehospital work is listed among the section's interests, and they want to see systems thinking beyond the ED door.
