Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a journal entry or reconciliation you prepared that turned out to be wrong. What happened and how did you catch it or get told?

honesty about mistakes and whether they have a real process for catching errors, not just avoiding them

Tell me about a time an internal or external auditor pushed back on something you provided. How did you respond?

composure and thoroughness when their work is being scrutinized, since audit response is a core duty here

Describe a process improvement you identified and pushed through in an accounting function. What was broken and what changed?

whether they actually drive improvement versus just following existing procedures

Tell me about a time you had to explain a variance to budget or a prior period trend to someone outside accounting.

ability to translate financial analysis into plain language for non-finance stakeholders

Tell me about a time you worked independently on something with very little oversight versus a time you had to lean heavily on a team. What made those situations different?

self-direction and collaboration balance, since the role requires both independent ownership and cross-team partnership

Technical

Walk me through how you handle the month-end close process, from start to finish, in your current role.

whether the candidate actually owns a close cycle end to end versus just doing pieces of it

What's your experience with Workday or Epic, specifically on the financial and revenue cycle side rather than just as an end user?

whether their systems experience matches the specific tools this role runs on, not just general ERP familiarity

Give me an example of a GAAP rule or government regulation you had to apply that wasn't straightforward, and how you figured out the right treatment.

depth of GAAP knowledge beyond textbook recall, and research habits when the answer isn't obvious

What's your experience preparing tax returns or schedules, and how closely did you work with a separate tax team on those?

real exposure to the tax-support piece of the job versus general accounting only

Situational

Say you're closing the books and a number doesn't tie out to your supporting schedule with two hours left before the deadline. What do you do?

judgment under close-cycle time pressure and whether they escalate versus force a number to fit

You're asked to help implement a new internal control over an area you're responsible for, but the operations team thinks it adds unnecessary steps to their workflow. How do you handle that conversation?

ability to balance control ownership with cross-functional relationships across teams like Supply Chain or HR

How do you decide what to prioritize when you have a tax schedule due, a reconciliation due, and an ad-hoc request from leadership, all in the same week?

organizational skill and judgment on competing deadlines, which the posting flags directly

This role expects extra evening and weekend hours during month-end, quarter-end, and year-end. How have you managed that kind of workload in the past, and what does it look like for you now?

realistic expectations about the reporting-period crunch and honesty about capacity
