Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you built or reset operating standards for an office. How did you get people to actually follow them?

What they are checking: Whether they can make standards stick through follow-up and buy-in, not just memos.

You'll manage the Operations Manager and Facilities Manager directly. How do you coach managers rather than doing their jobs for them?

What they are checking: Whether they lead through others in a hands-on role without becoming a bottleneck.

Tell me about a time you found a way to cut operating costs without hurting service to the people you supported.

What they are checking: Whether they manage financial health with judgment rather than blunt cuts.

Describe a time you had to keep operations running through a disruption, like an office move or a system change.

What they are checking: Whether they plan and communicate well enough that the business keeps working during change.

What would you do

You'd be supporting more than 200 employees and brokers across a downtown office and a suburban one, plus the corporate headquarters. How would you spend your first month?

What they are checking: Whether they listen and assess before changing routines in a high-visibility office.

A top-producing broker is frustrated with operations support and goes straight to the Market Leader. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can address a high-value fee-earner's concerns without undercutting their own team.

The Regional Director of Operations rolls out a new process that you think won't work well in Chicago. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can push back with evidence and still carry out the decision once it is made.

How would you make sure the suburban office doesn't feel like a second priority compared to downtown and headquarters?

What they are checking: Whether they deliver consistent service across locations instead of focusing on whoever is closest.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd build the annual business plan and budget with the Market Leader and Director of Brokerage.

What they are checking: Whether they understand how brokerage revenue, headcount and expenses come together into a credible market budget.

What metrics would you track to know whether the Chicago office's operations are healthy?

What they are checking: Whether they can define measurable service and financial indicators instead of relying on feel.
