Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time an abnormal test result almost slipped through the cracks. What happened and what did you change afterward?

attention to detail and personal accountability in a system where missed follow-up can delay a cancer diagnosis

Describe a situation where a physician disagreed with your read on a patient's readiness for a next step, like starting chemo. How did you handle it?

how the candidate advocates for the patient while maintaining a working partnership with physicians

Tell me about a time you built or improved an educational tool or program for patients, maybe around screening or a specific treatment. What made you decide the existing materials weren't enough?

initiative and comfort creating patient-facing education, which the job lists as a direct responsibility

Describe a time you represented your hospital or department at a community screening event or education program. What was your role?

willingness to take on the community outreach piece of the job beyond direct clinical duties

How do you keep yourself current on changes in cancer detection and treatment, and can you give an example of something new you learned that changed how you cared for a patient?

commitment to ongoing professional growth given the OCN certification expectation and fast-moving field

Technical

Walk me through how you'd manage a QCL, or quality care list, for a physician with a heavy patient load. How do you decide what gets your attention first?

whether the candidate actually understands the coordination tool central to this role and can prioritize under volume

How do you coordinate care for a patient moving between day surgery, inpatient, and outpatient during active treatment, when three different teams have three different plans?

real experience navigating the continuity-of-care handoffs the job explicitly requires

What's your approach to documenting patient education and assessments in the EMR so the next clinician who opens the chart actually understands what happened?

documentation discipline and understanding that the chart is a communication tool, not paperwork

How would you explain the purpose and process of a colonoscopy or mammogram to a patient who is scared and keeps saying they'd rather not know?

patient education skill and ability to motivate without being pushy or dismissive of fear

What does 'expediting results reporting' actually look like day to day for you, and where have you seen that process break down?

hands-on knowledge of the workflow gaps that cause delays in cancer diagnosis and treatment

Situational

A patient just found out their biopsy is malignant and is sitting in front of you, overwhelmed. What do you actually say and do in that first ten minutes?

ability to deliver emotional support and education simultaneously without overwhelming a frightened patient

You're covering a colleague's patients for the day plus your own, and a patient calls anxious about a delayed test result. How do you triage your time?

prioritization skill in a fast-paced clinic with real time constraints

If a patient tells you they're skipping their radiation appointments because of transportation and fear, what's your next move?

problem-solving that connects clinical needs with practical barriers, and whether the candidate escalates or handles it solo appropriately
