About the work
Walk me through how you take and document a full set of vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, on a patient.
What they are checking: basic clinical competency and comfort with routine tasks that must be done correctly without close supervision
How do you collect and label a urine or sputum specimen to make sure it's tied to the right patient?
What they are checking: knowledge of specimen labeling and identification protocols, an area with real safety risk if done wrong
Describe how you'd help transfer a patient who needs a sliding transfer with a second person, or move someone who weighs close to what you'd need help with.
What they are checking: understanding of safe body mechanics and use of assistive devices, plus willingness to ask for a second person
What steps do you take for hand hygiene and infection control when caring for a patient in isolation?
What they are checking: knowledge of infection prevention procedures and consistency in following them, not just when someone is watching
Have you ever had to remove an IV, do post mortem care, or perform a bladder scan? Walk me through your comfort level with any of those tasks.
What they are checking: honest self-assessment of skill range on tasks that vary by unit and require specific competency
