Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

You'd provide oversight for part-time student van drivers. How do you set a standard with student drivers who are your peers in age?

What they are checking: Whether they can set clear expectations for student drivers close in age, earning respect through fairness and consistency rather than authority.

What would you do

You'd coordinate schedules across several transportation scheduling systems. How do you keep runs straight when the schedule changes during the week?

What they are checking: Whether they can manage changing schedules accurately across systems, so students reach their placements on time and no one is left waiting.

You are driving students who are going out to work in neighborhoods across the city. What is your responsibility to them beyond getting there?

What they are checking: Whether they understand their duty to keep students safe and accounted for, not just to deliver them to an address.

The weather turns and the roads are bad. How do you decide whether to make the run?

What they are checking: Whether they will put safety first in bad weather and communicate the decision clearly, rather than taking risks to keep a schedule.

The posting also names providing transportation for University executives and dignitaries. What changes about a run like that?

What they are checking: Whether they can adjust their manner for executives and visitors, being punctual, discreet and polished while still driving safely.

A student is running late and the next pickup is waiting. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can balance waiting for one student against others' time, communicating clearly instead of making choices that strand someone.

This is part-time on the academic year, late September to June, with a choice of morning or afternoon shift Monday through Friday. Which shift, and does that pattern work for you?

What they are checking: Whether the part-time, school-year schedule and shift truly fit their life, so the program can count on them through June.

About the work

This role drives university students to tutoring placements at Chicago public schools and community organizations. What professional driving have you done?

What they are checking: Whether they have safe, professional driving experience, since they would be responsible for carrying students through city traffic every day.

You'd manage and maintain the vehicles, including fueling, cleanliness, oil changes and repairs. How do you keep a vehicle roadworthy across a school year?

What they are checking: Whether they keep vehicles maintained on a schedule, because a breakdown or unsafe van puts students at risk and disrupts tutoring programs.

You'd inspect and maintain vehicles including trucks, buses and vans. Which have you driven, and what licence do you hold?

What they are checking: Whether they have the vehicle experience and license the job requires, since driving larger vehicles legally depends on holding the right credential.
