Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
Behavioral
Walk me through a new product development program you managed from concept through launch. What was the product, and what was your role in each phase-gate stage?
whether the candidate has genuinely run a full NPD lifecycle versus just a piece of one
Tell me about a time you had to drive a decision or deadline with engineering, manufacturing, or supply chain leads who didn't report to you and weren't fully on board. How did you get alignment?
ability to lead cross-functionally without formal authority, which the posting explicitly calls out
Describe a project where the schedule, cost, and quality goals were all in tension. How did you decide what to protect and what to trade off?
judgment in balancing the classic project triangle on a real program, not just textbook awareness
Give me an example of a lessons-learned process you ran after a project. What did you actually change on the next program because of it?
whether continuous improvement is a real practice for them or just a phrase they use
Tell me about a time a project you were leading started to slip. When did you know, how did you communicate it upward, and what did you do about it?
early warning instincts and transparency with leadership rather than hiding problems
How have you contributed to improving an NPI or phase-gate process itself, beyond just running projects through it?
appetite for process ownership and continuous improvement leadership called out in the posting
Technical
How do you typically build a project schedule for a complex NPD program with many workstreams, and how do you keep it realistic as things change?
hands-on scheduling and planning competence rather than just familiarity with the vocabulary
What's your experience with formal phase-gate processes, and how did you handle a gate review where the project wasn't actually ready to pass?
real exposure to disciplined stage-gate execution and honesty about escalating unready work
Tell me about a make-versus-buy decision you were involved in. What factors drove the call, and how did it play out?
understanding of sourcing, cost, and logistics tradeoffs on physical products
What's your background with powered products, generators, or similar machinery, and how has that shaped the way you manage development risk?
whether the domain experience is real and specific, not just generic PM background
Situational
Say you're six weeks from a design freeze gate and a supplier tells you a key component won't meet target cost. Walk me through what you'd do.
structured risk and mitigation thinking under real schedule and cost pressure
How do you approach hitting a target product cost when engineering wants a feature or material that pushes cost above target?
ability to hold cost discipline while still respecting engineering's technical concerns
Two of your functional stakeholders, say quality and manufacturing, disagree on a design change late in the program. How do you run that conversation to get to a decision?
facilitation skill and decisiveness when cross-functional partners are at odds
