Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

How do you work with APPs in the ICU and clinic so care is consistent when you are not physically present?

What they are checking: Whether they can lead a team-based model and use APP support well instead of trying to do everything themselves.

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a referring physician or surgeon about a patient's plan. How did you resolve it?

What they are checking: How they handle clinical conflict while keeping relationships with colleagues strong.

How do you approach goals-of-care conversations with families of ICU patients who are unlikely to recover?

What they are checking: Whether they can lead hard conversations with honesty and compassion, which is central to critical care.

How do you stay effective and avoid burnout when covering both clinic and ICU call?

What they are checking: Whether they have a sustainable approach to a demanding schedule, which predicts how long they stay.

What draws you to a community-based, not-for-profit system in central Illinois rather than an academic center?

What they are checking: Whether they truly want this practice setting and are likely to put down roots.

What would you do

This position covers pulmonology inpatient and outpatient plus critical care in a closed-ICU model at Decatur Memorial. How would you want your time split, and why?

What they are checking: Whether their practice preferences fit the actual blend of work this community hospital needs.

In a community setting, how do you decide when a critically ill patient needs to go to a tertiary center?

What they are checking: Whether they know the limits of the local resources and make transfer decisions without ego.

The system wants to grow this service line. What would you build first in pulmonology here, and how would you know it was working?

What they are checking: Whether they can think like a program builder, not just a practicing clinician.

About the work

Walk me through how you manage a patient with ARDS who is not improving on standard ventilator settings in a community ICU.

What they are checking: Their clinical depth and their judgment about what can be done locally versus when to transfer.

What does a good outpatient pathway look like for lung nodules or COPD patients coming out of the hospital?

What they are checking: Whether they think about continuity of care across settings, which reduces readmissions.
