Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you had to diagnose a vehicle problem without the full shop and tools you'd normally have.
What they are checking: Resourcefulness in the field and whether they know when a repair can be done on site versus towed in.
Tell me about a time you were working alone and made a mistake. What did you do about it?
What they are checking: Honesty and ownership when no one would have noticed, which matters for a job with little direct supervision.
What draws you to mobile repair instead of working in a shop every day?
What they are checking: Whether they truly want independence and driving between sites, or are just trying to escape a past job.
What would you do
This job takes you out of the shop to repair field vehicles on your own. How would you plan out a day with six units at four different locations?
What they are checking: Self-management and route planning, since nobody will be standing over them to set the order of work.
You get to a location and the dealer is upset that a truck has been down for two days. How do you handle that conversation?
What they are checking: Customer handling under pressure, since mobile techs represent U-Haul to dealers who rely on the equipment for income.
How do you decide a truck is unsafe to rent and needs to be pulled from service?
What they are checking: Judgment on safety calls and willingness to take revenue equipment out of service when it is the right call.
Your service vehicle is low on a part you need for the next three stops. What do you do?
What they are checking: Planning ahead on parts and inventory so a whole day of field work does not fall apart.
About the work
A Ford or GMC truck at a dealer location won't start. Walk me through your first steps.
What they are checking: A logical no-start diagnosis from battery and connections through fuel and ignition before guessing at parts.
U-Haul uses its own technology to assess field vehicles. How comfortable are you logging inspections and repairs on a tablet or phone app?
What they are checking: Whether they can keep digital records accurate, because the company tracks field equipment through its own systems.
What preventive maintenance items do you check on a rental truck that sees heavy use from many different drivers?
What they are checking: Understanding of how rental abuse shows up in brakes, tires, fluids and suspension, and what to catch early.
