Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time a QC check failed in your lab. How did you figure out what went wrong?

What they are checking: Whether they troubleshoot methodically and document corrective actions, which accredited labs require.

Routine testing can be repetitive. How do you stay careful on the hundredth sample of the week?

What they are checking: Whether they have habits that keep their accuracy steady during high-volume routine work.

What would you do

A sample arrives past its holding time or at the wrong temperature. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they follow rejection rules for regulatory samples even when it means asking the client to resample.

You get a positive E. coli result on a public water system sample. What happens next and how fast?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the public health urgency and the notification steps a positive result triggers.

Microbial Source Tracking is a fast-changing field. How would you explain to a county official what an MST result can and can't tell them?

What they are checking: Whether they can communicate the limits of a method so people don't overread a contamination source.

Surface water testing under the Clean Water Act can spike in summer. How do you handle a sudden jump in samples?

What they are checking: Whether they can prioritize and stay accurate under seasonal pressure without cutting corners.

About the work

Walk me through testing a drinking water sample for total coliforms and E. coli using an enzymatic method, from receipt to reported result.

What they are checking: Whether they know the full workflow including holding times, incubation and result interpretation under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

How do you use a Laboratory Information Management System day to day, and how do you catch data entry mistakes before results go out?

What they are checking: Whether they treat LIMS accuracy as part of the science, since a wrong report can mislead a water system.

What experience do you have with PCR or other molecular methods, and how do you prevent contamination in the lab?

What they are checking: Whether they have real bench habits for molecular work, which the posting calls out for Microbial Source Tracking.

How have you used MALDI-TOF or culture and microscopy to identify an organism, and what do you do when the ID is ambiguous?

What they are checking: Whether they know when to confirm with a second method rather than reporting a shaky identification.
