Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you built a book of business mostly through your own prospecting. Where did the first ten customers come from?
What they are checking: Whether they can generate pipeline on their own, since a remote outside role has no walk-in traffic.
Tell me about a deal you lost that you thought you had. What did you change afterward?
What they are checking: Whether they learn from losses or explain them away, which predicts growth in a commission role.
You work remotely with no one checking in daily. How do you keep yourself accountable to activity numbers?
What they are checking: Self-management, because a remote territory role fails quietly when the person sets no structure.
How do you keep your CRM current when you're in the car most of the day?
What they are checking: Discipline about pipeline data, since managers forecast a remote rep's territory from what they log.
What would you do
This territory runs from Rockford and Belvidere out to Marengo and Crystal Lake. How would you plan a week so you're seeing the right merchants and not just driving?
What they are checking: Whether they can run a large rural-and-suburban territory with a plan instead of reacting to whoever calls.
A restaurant owner tells you their current processor is cheaper per transaction. How do you talk about total cost without bad-mouthing the competitor?
What they are checking: Whether they understand blended versus interchange-plus pricing well enough to sell on value and stay honest.
How would you work with U.S. Bank branch bankers in this territory to get referrals for Elavon merchant services?
What they are checking: Whether they see branch partners as a referral channel they have to earn and feed, not just ask.
A merchant you signed six months ago calls angry about a funding delay. What do you do in the next hour?
What they are checking: Whether they own the relationship after the sale and know to pull in service instead of passing blame.
About the work
Walk me through how a card transaction moves from the merchant's terminal to the money landing in their account.
What they are checking: Basic fluency in authorization, settlement and funding, which merchants expect a payments rep to explain plainly.
What questions would you ask a small retailer to figure out whether they need a countertop terminal, a POS system or online payments?
What they are checking: Needs discovery that matches product to how the business actually takes payments.
What do you know about chargebacks, and how would you explain them to a new merchant before they sign?
What they are checking: Whether they set honest expectations up front so merchants are not blindsided by disputes later.
