Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
This role splits time between a 20-bed inpatient rehab unit and an outpatient neurorehab clinic. How do you see yourself dividing your attention and energy between the two?
What they are checking: Whether they genuinely want a hybrid practice or are hoping to drift toward one side over time.
How do you work with neuropsychology when you have a patient with MS or a concussion whose thinking problems are holding back their return to work?
What they are checking: Whether they use the neuropsychologists on the team as real partners instead of just sending a referral.
Tell me about a time a patient or family expected much more recovery than you thought was realistic. How did you handle that conversation?
What they are checking: Honesty about prognosis delivered in a way that keeps hope and keeps the family engaged in therapy.
How do you run a team conference on the rehab unit so that therapy, nursing and case management leave with clear next steps?
What they are checking: Leadership of an interdisciplinary team, which drives length of stay and outcomes on an inpatient rehab unit.
What would you do
A patient with a new spinal cord injury on the unit develops a pounding headache and a blood pressure of 190 over 100. What do you do in the first few minutes?
What they are checking: Whether they recognize autonomic dysreflexia instantly and know to find and remove the trigger, not just treat the number.
Call here is shared with APCs and covers nights, weekends and holidays. How do you support an APC who calls you overnight unsure about a patient?
What they are checking: Whether they will be a reachable, non-punishing backup so the APCs feel safe calling early instead of late.
The unit has strong hospitalist support for medically complex patients. Where do you see your job ending and theirs beginning?
What they are checking: Clear ownership of the rehab plan while knowing when to hand off acute medical problems without friction.
About the work
Walk me through how you set rehab goals for a patient admitted to the unit after a stroke, and how you decide when they're ready to go home.
What they are checking: Whether they plan discharge from day one using function, safety and home supports rather than reacting late.
Tell me about your approach to spasticity management, from oral meds to chemodenervation to intrathecal baclofen. Where do you draw the line between options?
What they are checking: Depth in the procedure-heavy part of neurorehab that the outpatient practice clearly leans on.
How do you manage a patient with a moderate TBI who is agitated and pulling at lines, without leaning on sedating medications that slow recovery?
What they are checking: Knowing that agitation after brain injury needs environmental and behavioral tools first, because heavy sedation can set recovery back.
There's room for some musculoskeletal work in the outpatient clinic. What MSK skills do you bring, and how much of that do you want in your week?
What they are checking: Whether their outpatient interests fit the gap the department is trying to fill with a fourth neurorehab physician.
