Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to bring a manufacturing process into compliance with an AS9100 clause like 7.5.1.2 or 7.5.1.3. What was the gap and how did you close it?

whether the candidate has hands-on experience translating AS9100 requirements into actual shop floor controls, not just familiarity with the standard

Give me an example of a Continuous Improvement or Annual Improvement Plan cost savings target you owned. How did you build the plan and what happened when you fell behind?

whether they've actually managed a CI/AIP metric as an accountable owner, including how they react when targets slip

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a design engineer during a design review about manufacturability. How did you make your case and what was the outcome?

ability to influence product design decisions using process and machining knowledge, and how they handle pushback from another function

Tell me about a person on your team who was underperforming. What did you do, and how did it end?

real coaching and accountability track record versus a scripted answer about mentorship

Tell me about a time you had to drive a change that manufacturing, quality, and procurement all had different opinions about. How did you get alignment?

cross-functional influence and conflict resolution skill in a matrixed aerospace environment

Technical

Describe the most complex piece of manufacturing automation you've conceptualized and commissioned, from the initial idea through to running production.

depth of real experience across the full capital equipment lifecycle versus just specifying or overseeing outside vendors

Tell me about a machining, grinding, honing, or lapping process you improved. What was the before and after on cost, scrap, or throughput?

whether their process improvement claims are backed by real metrics and specific process knowledge in these exact operations

How do you set up metrics for a manufacturing engineering and programming department so they actually change behavior instead of just getting reported upward?

whether they understand metrics as a management tool versus a compliance exercise

Give me an example of using DMAIC or a similar root cause method on a scrap or yield problem. What did the data actually show, and did it match your first guess?

whether they follow structured problem solving through to data-driven conclusions instead of jumping to assumed fixes

How have you used your ERP system's manufacturing functions to catch a problem before it hit the floor, like a routing error or a capacity conflict?

practical, not just theoretical, fluency with ERP as a manufacturing control tool

Situational

Walk me through how you would handle a DMR that points to a routing problem affecting a part that's mid-production on the floor right now.

how they triage a live nonconformance issue while balancing schedule pressure, documentation, and root cause discipline

Describe how you'd prioritize a Project Management Planner with more open projects than your team has capacity to run at once.

practical project portfolio management skill and whether they can say no or resequence work under constraint

Walk me through how you'd justify a new capital equipment purchase to leadership when the payback period is longer than they'd like.

ability to build a business case and negotiate capital decisions rather than just technically speccing equipment
