Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

How do you oversee an outside engineering firm so their detailed design meets your standards?

What they are checking: Whether they can direct and check consultant work without doing it all themselves.

How do you develop engineers on your team who are strong in design but new to construction support?

What they are checking: Whether they help engineers grow into field and commissioning work, not just office design.

Tell me about a design mistake that made it to the field. What did you change after?

What they are checking: Whether they own errors and improve the review process so the team learns from them.

What would you do

A commissioning test fails a week before first fire. How do you lead your team through it?

What they are checking: Whether they can stay calm and organize a fast, safe fix when schedule pressure is high.

Two projects need your best engineer at the same time. How do you decide?

What they are checking: Whether they can balance team workload against project risk and explain the choice.

About the work

Walk me through the electrical system of a combined cycle plant, from the generator to the grid.

What they are checking: Whether they understand generators, isophase bus, GSUs, auxiliary systems and the switchyard as one design.

What do you look for when reviewing a protection and relay design for a gas turbine generator?

What they are checking: Whether they know the key protection schemes and coordination that keep a large generator safe.

Procurement needs your input on a GSU transformer with a long lead time. What do you focus on in the spec?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how transformer ratings, testing and lead time affect cost and schedule.

How do you size the auxiliary power system and decide on medium voltage versus low voltage distribution?

What they are checking: Whether they understand load studies and the practical tradeoffs in plant auxiliary design.

What interconnection requirements from the utility have caused you the most trouble on thermal projects?

What they are checking: Whether they have dealt with utility specs, relay settings and testing at the point of interconnection.

Job Description Position Overview As a Manager, Thermal Electrical Engineering, you will lead and develop a team of engineers responsible for the electrical engineering, procurement support, and construction/commissioning support of cutting-edge Thermal generation projects (natural gas combustion turbines, combined cycle power plants, and related facilities). You will be primarily responsible for managing internal engineering resources and overseeing selected Engineering Firms to complete final detailed design packages for projects to be built. The electrical systems of these projects typically include large turbine generators, isophase bus duct, medium voltage and low voltage auxiliary systems (switchgear, breakers, MCCs), generator step-up transformers (GSUs), switchyard equipment, and high/extra-high voltage transmission interconnections to the grid. Invenergy follows a hybrid schedule, working in office Monday through Thursday and remotely on Fridays. Responsibilities: Electrical Engineering Management Responsibilities • Manage up to 2 or 3 engineers; provide day-to-day technical guidance on issues encountered during engineering design, construction, commissioning, and placed-in-service activities. • Conduct regular meetings with the assigned team, supervise project assignments and priorities, and perform performance reviews and coaching for team members. • Responsible for achieving assigned goals for the team and department, including quality, schedule, and cost objectives for electrical deliverables. • Support upper management with strategic planning, resource planning, and defining goals for the Thermal Electrical Engineering team. • Develop and maintain standard designs, processes, and procedures for Thermal Electrical Engineering (e.g., BOP standards, switchyard and MV/LV auxiliary design templates). • Implement industry best practices and incorporate project lessons learned across the team to continuously improve quality and execution. • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry technology through training, conferences, and engagement with OEMs and EPC partners. Electrical Engineering and Projects’ Technical Responsibility • Assist in developing project-specific construction, engineering, and equipment specifications for thermal generation electrical systems (turbine-generator, isophase bus, MV/LV auxiliaries, protective relaying, station service, and switchyard). • Assist in the development of new projects by analyzing conceptual designs that comply with all critical owner and interconnection requirements and support RFQ specifications. • Review conceptual project designs and validate compliance with applicable owner standards, utility interconnection requirements, and codes/standards. • Prepare and validate electrical load lists and energy calculations (auxiliary power, station service, cable sizing, losses, and related studies inputs). • Conduct thorough design reviews of electrical deliverables (drawings, technical specifications, and studies) including Balance of Plant, switchyard, and transmission line interconnection. • Define the scope of all required electrical system studies (e.g., short circuit, arc flash, protection coordination, grounding, harmonic, and dynamic studies as applicable) and review results for accuracy and compliance. • Track design schedules, update stakeholders, and ensure critical electrical engineering milestones and deadlines are met. • Coordinate with operations engineering to incorporate lessons learned into new design reviews and specifications to continuously improve quality. • Coordinate information and resolve technical interfaces between equipment suppliers, EPC/construction contractors, utilities, and the Engineer of Record. • Support project close-out by organizing and transferring all as-built documentation to the final project owner including electrical drawings, schematics, bill of materials, electrical studies, and relay settings. Procurement and Construction Support • Provide procurement technical support, including preparation of specifications, vendor evaluations, support for technical RFPs, review of technical offers and shop drawings, and participation in factory visits and FAT inspections for major electrical equipment. • Review competitive bids for owner-procured electrical material; support purchasing and manage suppliers throughout the engineering and commissioning process. • Monitor construction progress both remotely and via on-site inspections; support resolution of field issues and RFIs related to electrical scope. • Attend on-site meetings with electrical construction contractors and in-person coordination meetings with interconnection utilities. • Coordinate with operations engineering when reviewing designs and during construction/commissioning to ensure smooth turnover and long-term maintainability.
